Good Lorde!

Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, best known by her stage name Lorde, has released a new song. Hailing from New Zealand, the 17 year old singer-songwriter’s hit song “Royals” debuted at number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 and has also reached the top on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. She is the first New Zealand solo artist to have a number 1 song in the United States. A descent of Croatian and Irish ancestry, she looks and sounds matured despite her young age (just look at those gorgeous eyes!). She began writing songs at the age of 13 or 14, and her unique style is largely influenced by her mother who introduced her to books and poetry.

Yes Lorde, we just might make you our ruler and call you Queen Bee.

The “Royals” singer has covered Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s soundtrack. My oh my, it sounds good! It fits the movie rather well. With Lorde’s deep, dark, husky vocals and the dramatic, menacing music, it reflects the story’s dark dystopian theme. I could almost imagine Katniss and Peeta running while the Capitol closes in on them! KYAAAAA DON’T LET THEM CATCH YOUUUUUU!

Here’s a sneak preview of the anticipated track by Lorde herself:

Lorde could almost be a character in The Hunger Games with this braided hairstyle.

On a side note, Lorde’s fierce eyes and wild curly hair complements the wild persona conveyed through the song. The song was originally by a British new wave band, Tears for Fears. According to Curt Smith, vocalist and bass guitarist of the band, “The concept is quite serious – it’s about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery it causes.” It is great that this song was chosen, given a twist, and included in the movie’s soundtrack as one of the main themes in The Hunger Games is about power. Some people argue that the original is better. It definitely has that 80’s vibe (duh, it is an 80’s band), but in my opinion, it doesn’t really fit in with the movie. Well, give both the songs a listen and you be the judge!
