StyleWatch #43: April 2019

Hey everyone and we’re back with another issue of StyleWatch! Despite it being the season of sweatpants and hoodies (nothing wrong with that, we aren’t fashion police-ing no one), we still managed to catch a few students on campus who are still rocking their individual styles despite the exams and assignment period. We present to you this week’s StyleWatch:

Gillian Lim | 1st Year ICS with Film & TV | Malaysia

Jie Xin didn’t come to play when she stepped in with that vintage, American Dream fit. Her faded statement tee of what it seems to be a red paint advertisement screams classic 50’s America. But what makes it more interesting is that it looks like a nod towards on of Andy Warhol’s most famous artworks – ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’, which both are very much the classic American Dream aesthetic.

By breaking the colour palette with a pair of comfort-coloured, striped pants pulled the vintage, faded colour scheme together, and this is emphasized with matching soft pink sandals. And finally, the soft colour scheme was broken with a simple, dark brown belt, constructing an overall earth-coloured composition.

When asked how she assembled a simple, yet stylish outfit with such a cute colour palette, she says: “The most important to me is comfort, while being able to stay reasonably fashionable on a bad day.” And she really encapsulates this statement on them fabrics!

Hazirah | 1st Year Psychology | Malaysia

Hazirah was a real heartbreaker (a reference to her lipstick) when she caught my attention in her bold makeup and outfit. Despite it being the assignment season and exam period catching up, she brought the colours in her out. According to her entire look was inspired by a fashion Youtuber known as bestdressed. Her nude-ish pink ruffled sleeve top was the perfect contrast against the lilac purple pants of hers that she thrifted. Along with her patterned silk bawal scarf and avocado socks from Monki, her outfit was full of underlying and undeniable layers of texture making it look funky and totally dope! She sealed the deal with eye-catching makeup, purple eyeshadow and lipstick to complete the entire look! Overall, she looked like a rock-star ready to scissor her papers! (pun not intentional and is quite lame but hey, we’re all a little overfried from the end of the semester)

Kuhanesh A/L Thaventhran | 1st Year ICS with Film & TV | Malaysia

Another look which continues the vintage vibes train features a frequent face on StyleWatch –  Kuhanesh. He is usually seen wearing antique-looking hawaiian shirts, so today we’ll be taking a closer look at one of them! This one looks like an array of watercolour paintings of building-shaped silhouettes arranged asymmetrically, splashed with faded hues of blues and purples, pushing some major “retro, daddy vibes.” (his words! Not mine!)

Pairing with some black skinny jeans and a belt completes the overall dark colour palette. And finally, pulling the entire outfit together, he finishes it off with a pair of sneakers with symmetrical shapes (which look like crinkle-cut fries) with shades of white, gray, and black, complementing the shapes of his shirt.

And that is a wrap for StyleWatch of the academic year! We hope you’ve enjoyed sticking with us, and see you on the next academic year!
